the blob is a classic monster b-movie from the 50's that stars the legendary steve mcqueen. it is a film that somewhat satirizes the monster movies of the time. it is a film that has had sequels and remakes. it is a film that has found it's way into the criterion collection. i like this movie, it's a fun little sci-fi/horror flick with nifty effects and a good pace. back in '13 when i watched it, i rated it 72/100. i must of had problems with it, although i'm trying to remember what they were and i'm a little stumped. if i think really hard it probably comes down to the acting, the story, the... read more

film #23 of hoop-tober 2.0 the quintessential b-movie, the blob has some fun moments but is undercut by its weak third act. irvin yeaworth strikes the right tone for the film, from the jingly opening theme to the saturated color. he embraces the inherent cheesiness of the concept and that helps it work for much of the film. unfortunately, it doesn't last, and the flaws become evident. the special effects were fake-looking even for the 1950s, and while yeaworth goes full-bore it still hurts any chance to make the titular alien threatening. the film also doesn't quite now how to have fun with... read more
