i had doubts about this movie. they stem from good reason though. was it ever released in theatres? i don't think so and if so barely. a film with cusack, thorton and directed by ramis that had little fan fare and barely released had to have problems.
i also am not a huge fan of john cusack. i think he is a good actor but he tends to make poor choices. so much so that most of his recent output is direct to video crap. the ice harvest was made before cusack was in the dtv mode but this movie was released roundabout the start of his end.
but watching all things directed by ramis this was next and you know what. it was exactly what i thought it would be. no better or worse than i thought and just not very good. the one bright shining spot of this movie was oliver platt who is pretty much the bright shining spot of any movie he is in.
other than platt you get nothing here but a boring unfunny generic heist thriller. really nothing happens for the first film except cusack talking to strippers and friends. that's it, nothing else, then the story kicks into gear and it is all twist after twist after twist. and all these twists and plot points were stuff i have seen a thousand times before and almost always better.
ramis directed this and it is a change of pace for him. the legendary comedy director turns to thriller (although i think this is a comedy-thriller) and although some nice camera work is achieved everything else falls flat. it's not that poorly made and ramis knows how to tell the story but it just doesn't work here. i would say ramis should stick to comedy but a) he has enough talent to expand as a director and b) he sadly passed away.
so if this is supposed to be funny i can tell you i didn't laugh once. i think i almost laughed once, thought 'that was funny' once and the rest of the time i thought is this supposed to be funny? i couldn't tell because it wasn't funny at all. only oliver platt was amusing and joyful on screen.
decent production values, not amazing but decent and a better than average cast and a good director and oliver platt. that's what the ice harvest has going for it. unfortunately it is not enough to make this movie work. unoriginal, boring, unfunny, unthrilling, generic and been done better a thousand times before is a good summation of this film.
if you are looking for a good crime thriller with billy bob look no further than a simple plan. it'll do you better than this one.
