it's weird that this got buried when the fast & furious franchise blew up the way it did. it's basically a mortal kombat movie but set to the tone of tokyo drift. except for once the only characters who really matter are all female, and not even in an overly fetishising way like the doa video games. so y'know, could've been much worse. plus you've got corey yuen directing some fun as heck action scenes, as he does. there's no way you put this flip-phone era time capsule on without checking your expectations and brain at the door, and for being so unabashedly dumb i kinda loved it. and you read more

first of all...doa is not a good movie, at least in the story sense, but... ...i actually enjoy this one to the extent that i take it out once in a while. why?!? well...it might be the incredibly over-the-top fighting choreography. it might also be because there's some comedic worth to be had from this one. ...or i'm just a sucker for these kinds of stupid movies. naaaah it's definitely the incredibly beautiful women, in skimpy clothing, fighting and being badasses... call me shallow, and just this once...i won't fight you over it. read more

doa: dead or alive feels much like if the spice girls decided to make their own mortal kombat flick. let that sink in. this movie is equal parts charlie's angels and enter the dragon, filtered through the hyper-frenetic lens of that early 00's, energy drink™, mtv, 2 fast 2 furious aesthetic. which means, i love it, duh. it sits comfortably alongside such dated and clumsy relics like xxx, lara croft: tomb raider, mission: impossible 2, and hell- even die another day. why not? the fun thing about movies like that and from that era is that they were totally unafraid to be as silly and as read more
