doa: dead or alive feels much like if the spice girls decided to make their own mortal kombat flick.
let that sink in.
this movie is equal parts charlie's angels and enter the dragon, filtered through the hyper-frenetic lens of that early 00's, energy drink™, mtv, 2 fast 2 furious aesthetic. which means, i love it, duh. it sits comfortably alongside such dated and clumsy relics like xxx, lara croft: tomb raider, mission: impossible 2, and hell- even die another day. why not?
the fun thing about movies like that and from that era is that they were totally unafraid to be as silly and as colorful as possible. the same ridiculous gimmicks and elements that were the most insufferable trends in action movies from back then are somehow the same things that make doa so much fun.
most of the time it seems in on the jokes, the rest of the time it's too aw-shucks simple to care. doa managed to assemble the right cast to shoulder 90 minutes of unfettered silliness. i wouldn't say the movie is bad, because it entertains in precisely the way it means to. i also completely concede that this kind of movie isn't for everyone.
me? i found its humor and energetic fight scenes- awash in vibrant colors -to be delightful. and sure, it's dated, but it feels like it was produced with some semblance of a budget. there's actual sets, and cool looking locales on display here. to say nothing of the bodies on display here.
doa is a non-serious romp with zero pretensions about its story. the movie is less concerned with its plot, and more concerned with eye-candy. it's fast food, but of the tastiest variety. it may not have the sharp wit, banging soundtrack, and imaginative special effects of mortal kombat but it towers over the bland and boring tastelessness of street fighter: the legend of chun li.
doa: dead or alive is nothing if not endearing in its earnest and simple ambitions. it's exactly what it means to be. shamelessly entertaining like a swimsuit edition magazine brought to life, but with loads of kung-fu, crazy stunts, ninjas, sword fights, and even a good explosive finale. you already know if this is for you or not.
