my relationship with police story is a weird one. it was one of the first hk action movies i saw and for some reason i hadn't developed a taste for its tendencies to emphasise attraction over narrative yet. it's an understatement to say i've become pretty obsessed with them since, so i was eager to go back and see what would happen on a rewatch. i do still consider supercop untouchable when it comes to this franchise (you can't beat that yeoh-chan combination), but this 100% rules and is filled with memorable scenes that pay off in either comedy or devil may care action. that mall-showdown is... read more

birth year challenge #21 criterion collection project 2020 #1 cult of personality jackie chan watched on eureka blu-ray. couple of hiccups during playback, so i might have to contact eureka about a replacement. probably should've waited for the criterion collection release. i haven't seen a "legit" jackie chan movie in what feels like forever. back in the early 90's, my dad would rent a crapload of jackie chan movies from the local mom and pop video store, and i definitely remember watching a bunch of them, especially rumble in the bronx read more

phrases like "important piece of action cinema" and "milestone in the martial arts genre" get thrown around a lot but police story is one of the few that are fundamentally deserving of such accolaids. think about it, we'll never get another set piece like the climax at the shopping mall ever again. this whole chapter of action movie history is closed, permanently. no stunt team in the world could rival chan's from back in the day. their family-like bond and insane dedication to evel knievel-esque stuntwork will probably forever be unrivaled. police story is a treasure, because it's still read more
