as soon as i started watching this i realised i hadn't actually seen the whole film before. we were about a third of the way through before i started to see parts i recognised. i am not referring to the breasts of natasha henstridge.* that's irrelevant. what we have here is a fairly good idea that lacks the proper execution. everything they did seemed to exaggerate the mid-90's bad cgi. when they used practical effects it was a lot better, barring the weird lens effects on an underwater alien sex dream. that was just fucking strange. *i kind of was. read

it took me a very long time to revisit this film. this extremely male-gazey, alien meets show girls knock-off, early cgi mess was the first and last film to give me literal nightmares as a child, when i first saw it while left unsupervised at a family friend's summer party. usually, it takes me a couple of views of a movie to retain key plot points for any length of time in mind but i was amazed to find just how many scenes i could recall with almost perfect clarity; despite only having seen species once, almost two decades ago, as a sleepy 9-year-old. watching it back now, it's hard to read
