as soon as i started watching this i realised i hadn't actually seen the whole film before. we were about a third of the way through before i started to see parts i recognised. i am not referring to the breasts of natasha henstridge.* that's irrelevant. what we have here is a fairly good idea that lacks the proper execution. everything they did seemed to exaggerate the mid-90's bad cgi. when they used practical effects it was a lot better, barring the weird lens effects on an underwater alien sex dream. that was just fucking strange. *i kind of was. read

it took me a very long time to revisit this film. this extremely male-gazey, alien meets show girls knock-off, early cgi mess was the first and last film to give me literal nightmares as a child, when i first saw it while left unsupervised at a family friend's summer party. usually, it takes me a couple of views of a movie to retain key plot points for any length of time in mind but i was amazed to find just how many scenes i could recall with almost perfect clarity; despite only having seen species once, almost two decades ago, as a sleepy 9-year-old. watching it back now, it's hard to read

if i had a discussion with 12-year old me who saw this horny alien movie in the theater i imagine it'd go a little something like this: 34yo me: "yo this shit is like a big budget fred olen ray movie!!!" 12yo me: "oh, okay, have you seen mortal kombat tho???" 34yo me: "fuck yes i have." cue 34yo me & 12yo me high fiving so hard the universe explodes. read

feminist brain: "this is some shitty sexist garbage" useless lesbian brain: "boobies good" this was on my watchlist just because hr giger did the creature designs. could have been a fun cheesy sci-fi action flick if they made sal a cool girl predator creature and maybe skipped all the sexist garbage. read

Actually isn't half bad. A wild cast and child actress Michelle Williams was already very good in her parts in the first ten minutes.
I like how sympathetic the monster is. She probably still has to be killed but you know and understand her motivations the whole time. read

verhoeven-esque plot without the sensibilities of the dutchman. although there is some good stylized action and direction. read

I was hoping to have a bit more fun with this one, but was tragically let down. I knew mating was a pretty key part of the film but I didn't expect it to be a good 75-80% of it and it really just bored me to tears. There wasn't anything abhorrently bad (except for the CGI in the last act) but there wasn't anything great or even that good about Species either. read
