i originally saw this film at the toronto international film festival. i was working as a volunteer and i was an usher. i was suppose to guide people into the theatre and stay outside while the movie played. i didn't. eventually i got caught and was fired but i got to see a few solid movies.
before i was fired though i ended up being an escort for the stars as i walked them to their cars. i got to walk danny devito, sam jackson, anthony hopkins and alec baldwin to their cars. it was a lot of fun. i will always remember that even back then, hopkins looked a lot older, like a an old man, than he did on screen.
before that happened though i sat down instead of working and watched the edge and i loved it. it is the first and pretty close to only movie where i clapped and cheered in excitement at what was unfolding on the screen. i'm not saying it was the greatest movie ever made but man was it a hell of a lot of fun.
i was so stoked to watch it again when i spun my randomizer and it came up. and watching it again now i again had a great time. i did find that some of the story was a little contrived and baldwin at times was to baldwin (and at times i couldn't help but see trump) the movie still held my attention.
i knew what was going to happen but if you've never seen this movie before the changing plot would surprise you. you never know where it is going and when it becomes man against beast it gets really fucking good.
and hopkins rules in this picture. he carries it, he owns it and he makes it that much more enjoyable. his character feels real and you can see his head always thinking, always working and when he gives baldwin a prep talk you yourself feels energized and ready to go. he's amazing (and was nothing like the old man i walked to the car).
yeah, i still love this film and think it's great. hopkins makes this worth seeing as he is in top form, along with a great look, great production values, great music, some great mamet dialogue and great direction. you can't go wrong with the edge.
another little tidbit from my past:
i remember loving this film so much that when lee tamahori (the director) was announced as the next bond director i was so excited. he directed die another day. suffice to say, after that film i couldn't care less what he did next.
