back when this was released i just had to see it. it had great reviews but more importantly it was hailed as a revival/comeback/throwback to matthew broderick, the amazing 80's star of such films as ferris bueller, war games, project x, max dugan returns and ladyhawke.
and man did i love this film then, and every time i've watched it i loved it since. and every time i am flipping channels and this comes on tv i just can't help but watch it. and what is it that makes it so special?
is it because it is hilarious? maybe but also maybe because it is smart and original and finely tuned and well acted and very realistic in its characters, actions and look or the fact that it tells a pretty original story in a pretty original way.
this might just be my favourite movie starring reese witherspoon. this is by far chris klein's best (and possibly only) great performance. broderick kills it in his role. the guy (whose name i don't know) who plays the principal, he was god damn great.
really, from the second this film starts to the moment it ends you'll be in stitches. yeah, there are touching moments and sad moments put it is all played with such dry wit and expertise in comedic timing that even those times that are a bit of a downer you can't help but keep smiling, laughing or guffawing.
second to sideways this might be my most favourite alexander payne movie. in fact it might be my most favourite as it is definitely the most rewatchable. you just cannot not have a good time with this film (like every film payne has made) but what sticks it out from the rest is it's pure joy and unadulterated comedy that doesn't pull any punches and
its dark undertone that balances perfectly with its light hearted feel.
i just love this movie!!!
