a refreshing take on a classic tale, it was nice to watch a cindy with lots of agency and attitude, who refuses to be a passive character in her own story.
i know she had to get with the prince in the end, but really, why? granted, yes he had more personality than the disney incarnation but at the end of the day, he was an impulsive dufus who didn't know his arse from his elbow. aside from his hapless romantic shenanigans, i was kinda worried for the people of france if this dope was destined for the throne.
elsewhere, i enjoyed the rounding out of the evil stepmother (when is angelica huston ever not good in a shady matriarchal role?) and that the stepsisters got to enjoy distinct personalities. yay for jaqueline! boo marguerite.
there were some elements i wasn't so sure on - the random addition of da vinci in the role of an ersatz fairy godmother was a weird choice. initially, i thought the story might take on a kind of comedic 'princess bride' direction when he showed up (and still think that could have been kinda fun) as the visual look of the film certainly reminded me of it.
the film made a lot of admirable narrative changes to the well-worn tale but i think in playing it so utterly straight the filmmakers missed a trick or two, meaning that the final product, though enjoyable, is ultimately kinda forgettable.
