as an adaptation of the mario games, a fun children's adventure movie, or a sci-fi action comedy, super mario bros is an abject failure. however as an experimental piece capturing some strange fever dream, it has some merits. i was pleasantly surprised by how easy this was to watch, i was expecting it to be kinda painful and it isn't. it is so absurd right off the bat that it exempts itself from the normal rules of filmmaking. every strange or ridiculous decision is just par for the course. i really appreciated the cast's commitment to the characters, particularly richard edson and fisher read
