the music is great, the costumes or great and the story if as always great but there are a couple of problems that make this adaptation of the classic play a let down.
the biggest problem is that the film at times (too many times) feels staged, feels fake, feels like it is a filmed version of the play. that is not what you want when you watch a movie adaptation. you want to see gritty and real, not fake 'play like' sets or theatrical acting, not at all. it does improve over the film and there are other times when it looks really good but as i said too many times when it doesn't.
another problem is the lighting. like the stagey feel there are too many times when the film feels over lit and over done and just like the stagey feel it also seems to happen less as the film progresses.
and one final problem i will mention is that of the phantom. gerald butler? i couldn't at first grasp a singing masked butler but just like the rest of the problems by films end (or when the mask came off) butler grew into the role.
even still, after all those problems, the film was much better than i thought it would be and if you are a fan of musicals, theatre or just a phantom of the opera fan then you can't not get a kick out of watching this one.
