"the perfect 2000s werewolf as metaphor for coming of age film doesn't exis--" to be fair, ginger snaps isn't a truly perfect film. but it's probably as close to it as it could have gotten. john fawcett's film about two outsider sisters whose bond is tested when one of them is bitten by a lycanthrope crackles with wit, humor, and a delicious amount of gore. it's a film that feels very much like a movie of its time in the post-scream smart-talking genre-savvy teenagers way. and at the same time it doesn't feel particularly dated, touching on topics that are as relevant today as any other day.... read

while horror movies often have female protagonists, rarely does the story being told feel like it unfolds from any place of actual feminine experience. ginger snaps is different. i felt like i was getting a story from a viewpoint that was fundamentally alien to me, as a cishet guy. i loved that. most of the time, there's a dissociative element to female characters authored by male writers. it's about them, from a spectator's perspective. it often doesn't feel like their story while ginger snaps (deftly written by karen walton) is over here drafting cinematic connective tissue between puberty,... read
