while horror movies often have female protagonists, rarely does the story being told feel like it unfolds from any place of actual feminine experience. ginger snaps is different. i felt like i was getting a story from a viewpoint that was fundamentally alien to me, as a cishet guy. i loved that.
most of the time, there's a dissociative element to female characters authored by male writers. it's about them, from a spectator's perspective. it often doesn't feel like their story while ginger snaps (deftly written by karen walton) is over here drafting cinematic connective tissue between puberty, menstruation, and lycanthropic body horror.
if the trailer doesn't already intercut the school nurse talking about bodily changes with clips of the werewolf transformation, someone failed at their job. the movie is snappy, and smart, and unique in a genre typically dominated by stories penned exclusively by men. as a cishet guy myself, i rarely actually realize how stale that gets because movies like this are the exception rather than part of the norm- which is unfortunate.
horror needs more voices contributing to the common ideas of what's scary. the movie had me genuinely unsettled, which is a rare treat, even amongst current horror hits. ginger snaps is unique in how it managed to get under my skin. not just a well crafted film, but a damn good werewolf film in its own right.
