i love escape from new york. i love john carpenter. i love kurt russell. i love carpenter and russell together, what a team. in late '95 or early '96 when i first heard that snake plisken was returning to big screens i couldn't of been more excited. not only was snake back but carpenter was directing as well. so run to the theatre on opening night i did. my friend and i were ready for a great time at the movies. afterwards we walked out in silence. i said 'what did you think?' he shrugged his shoulders and said 'it wasn't very good.' he asked me and i said 'i liked it'. i wanted to like it, i... read more

i was way harsh on this last time i watched it, but i still sorta understand my sentiments. conceptually it's a goof and both carpenter & russell are going full dad mode, which is why shit like the tsunami surfin' and twangy butt rock is so memorably anti-cool. honestly though the weakest link here is carpenter's directing which has gotten punchy. i couldn't help but daydream, with bruce campbell's cameo and all, what sam raimi might've done with this. probably turned it into another obnoxiously fun three strooges fanfic. read more
