this movie never gets old. never. i've been watching it since i was about 12 and pretty much it has stayed just as funny if not funnier since the first fateful viewing.
what makes this movie so funny, other than the situations that occur is the performances by both martin and caine. martin is his usual hilarious comic self (come back steve we miss you!) but caine is outright hilarious in his role. his performance is just fantastic. you watch him scam the people around him and the way he delivers the lines they just reek of smarminess and comedy gold. we know he is coning, he knows he is coning and just his look, his performance and the reactions they create are priceless. it takes a great actor to give a performance where it seems genuinely fake yet real at the same time, where you tell the character is being untruthful but acts convincingly and all the while making it hilarious. i'm having trouble explaining why he is so good here but i guess the best way for you to understand is to watch the film.
caine has never been funnier than here. this film is one of the funniest of the 80's. there are so many classic lines and scenes i could be here for the entire runtime of the film pretty much describing every moment. right from the get go until the very last moment this film will make you laugh, make you tear (from laughing so hard) and make your belly ache in pain (from laughter).
this is one of the smartest comedies around and even though there are some goofy moments those goofy moments are ingenious to the plot, the characters and their motivations. dirty rotten scoundrels exceeds at all levels in filmmaking. it is pretty close to being perfectly paced, constructed, performed, put together, shot, directed, scripted and makes for 1 hour and 50 minutes of some of the funniest stuff pt on celluloid.
masterfully done mr. oz, mr. martin and mr. caine. masterfully done!
