stanley kubrick tried to keep this movie from us, his first, as he thought it was amateurish junk and i guess an embarrassment. when a copy was found and a blu ray eventually released i ate up the news and purchased the blu ray pretty much the day it was released.
i tell you it wasn't that bad and i don't see why kubrick had such a problem with it. sure the editing and acting and sound mix could of been better but still it's not terrible for a first feature. sure, there is virtually no sign of the future kubrick that would come a few years later but there is sign of talent and of kubrick's general stance on humanity and war.
i mean the whole film is about the horror of war and what it does to a man, something echoed in many of his later films. and there is the same sense of pacing and fluidity in story that is present in his latter films but it is very raw here.
i thought this was a decent first film for it's time and pretty well made for the most part. it's pretty short and it never out stood its welcome. maybe i'm giving it more praise than it deserves as i am a huge kubrick fan but i just didn't think it was that bad. yeah, it's his worst film, and yeah it's got it's problems but hell, it's different, it's unique, it's professional, it's kubrick.
