wiki hails this as the best film to come out of canada. i understand that this was meant to be a meditative exploration of communal grief in the face of a shared tragedy but i just couldn't connect with the material. i made it to the end but i was bored out of my tree for most of the film's running time. read more

... we're all citizens of a different town now. a place with its own special rules and its own special laws. a town of people living in the sweet hereafter. the sweet hereafter is a beautiful and delicate meditation on the nature and experience of human suffering and how it reverberates through time and affects everyone. this is a film that is not afraid to tackle the grim nature of suffering and tragic events head on. it doesn't skirt around the suffering that all of the characters of the film are going through and how this suffering is affecting their motivations and day to day decision read more

a moving look at coping with loss. ian holm is fantastic and does so much with very few actions. the non-linear storytelling really worked well to juxtapose his own grief with that of the town. my only qualm is that they didn't make it clear how much time had passed between his visit to the town and the later plane ride. read more
