should be nice book, but as movie it's so generic and bland. david lowery did a really weak job, but robert redford amazing. read more

if this is robert redford's last film, bless you, sir. the best way to describe this would probably be hell or high water, but replace the brothers with an old man, a girl who he loves and casey affleck being the most casey affleck he can ever be. man, i loved every minute of this. which is strange, considering i don't usually like david lowery's films. what are you still reading for? watch it. oh, you're waiting for the bad? well, i did say i was a cynic, right? the bad would probably be that the film is a little all over the place pace wise and i never really got a feel for some of the read more

i mostly really love the work of david lowery, even though he keeps friggin working with stupid known shithead casey affleck. this one i thought was just fine. it does have a real nice look, clearly shot on film, and i like the age-appropriate love interest of sissy spacek for robert redford. and tom waits playing one of his trademark weirdos, telling what turns out to be a true tom waits story! there's some special features on the dvd i watched where lowery clarified that the opening title card - "this story, also, is mostly true." - is an "overt nod" to butch cassidy. kind of a cute set of... read more
