ikiru has a familiar premise that has been explored and engaged with countless of films, some are more effective than others, but does the message last more than just a brief moment of inspiration? the message the movie wants to send across is a fairly simple one, how to live a life meaningfully, and ikiru tackles it with a slight different approach. akira kurosawa splits ikiru down into two essential parts, dependant on each other. the first part is fairly cliché and has a fair share of heavy handed moments. the narrator and narrative itself leave only a small room for thoughts, asking us to... read more

takashi shimura features as a city bureaucrat who upon being diagnosed with stomach cancer realizes that he hasn't actually lived in 20 years since his wife died. he takes the time he has left to find some joy in life and to give a meaning to his 30 years of being a cog in the bureaucratic machine. shimura is incredible in a performance that never got the credit it deserved. he completely becomes that frail, meek man that never stood up to anyone until he truly had nothing left to lose. kurosawa puts together a scathing critique of bureaucracies and politicians that also touches on read more

today i watched in the morning seven samurai my first akira kurasawa movie. and i was so hooked on his skills as a director that i wanted to watch another one of his movies. ikiru is completely different than seven samurai. it's even better. this movie feels like an emotional rollercoaster, i almost cried. ( i never cried on movies just ones in goodwill hunting but this is an exception) the good stuff first. this movie has looks amazing the cinematography at the end at the playground while he was singing was stunning. the acting was very good, especially from the protagonist. this movie is... read more

i watched this because so far every month in 2018 had me seeing a 5 star film and i didn't want to break that little four month streak. i expected i would love this, but i didn't expect how much. my attention span really isn't the greatest, so a film nearly two and a half hours in length is a bit of a daunting prospect for me. but i spent the last 30 or so minutes of my viewing wishing it would keep going. ikiru (which i'm told means "to live") is the story of a man, his role in life, and his imminent death. in a way, it is about hope in a hopeless situation. it delivers a blend of sadness... read more

I haven't watched many of Akira Kurosawa's films but really need to after seeing this one for this weeks classic. An office worker who finds out that he has terminal cancer tries to find some meaning in the remainder of his life. Takashi Shimura is really good and brings a lot of heart to his performance. It does drag on a bit towards the end but I guess it all has a point. Watched as part of IMDB's Top 250 movies. read more
