there's definitely some knee-jerk moments in the movie that absolutely haven't aged well, but i found myself otherwise captivated by this movie. nearly 80 years old and as dramatic, intense, and even as humorous as any moden adventure epic. paced surprisingly well, once the staid build up is over with, the rest of the movie is a thoroughly engrossing adventure about one man's journey to prove to his friends- and ultimately, himself, that he is not a coward.
he resigned his commission in the military right before his regiment's deployment to egypt to retake the city of khartoum. of course, his fiancee and his friends are shocked, and believe him to be a coward. taking their assessment to heart, he sets out to egypt on his own- aiming to aid his friends and former-comrades from behind the enemy lines, disguising himself as a mute slave. a process which required getting literally branded- for which he was called "brave".
he found validation in that moment, and you can tell in that singular scene everything this movie is about. the doctor who performed the branding had asked the ex-soldier why he was doing all this. the man informed the doctor that he was a coward. "so? be a coward and be happy." he replied. in turn, the man answers... "i've been a coward, doctor. and i wasn't happy."
stunning cinematography, excellent performances (for the most part) and a sweeping sense of old fashioned adventure make this vibrant classic an easy addition to my personal movie library, and warrants a full recommendation to boot.
