film #24 of hooptober 3.0: the quickening
it might seem odd to some that a horror flick about a man's obsession with rats can be emotionally engaging, but willard manages to pull that off. anchored by a great performance by crispin glover, glen morgan's film is one that, for all its silliness, manages to be an incredibly entertaining and occasionally even touching film. glover may be a strange guy but he's perfect to play willard, the lonely bullied man who finds companionship in a white rat named socrates and a dark side in the maniacal ben. the screenplay from morgan and gilbert ralston is more demented in the right ways than the 1971 original and morgan does fine work in bringing the film's creepier aspects to life, but never letting them overwhelm the story.
in addition to glover's fine work, there's good stuff from r. lee ermey -- reprehensible as willard's boss -- and laura elena herring as willard's friend and love interest. the film has a throwback feel and the ludicrous elements play nicely into that. the campier elements may be a turnoff for some, but those who like the 1980s horror classics will find a lot to appreciate here.
