a classic tear-jerker for sure. this film reaches for the heartstrings and plays them without a bit of shame. luckily, the performances here are all very excellent. from shirley maclane to danny devito, brooks gets the best performances from everyone in the film. this film is all about the three central relationships that occur over the course of a life time.
the script here is excellent. the way the film moves through these relationships with such ease and complexity is something that is rarely seen in movies of these types. the character arcs are very well drawn. it allows for the emotional impact of the later scenes to be more than one would think given the plot of the film. it has one of the greatest death bed scenes in all of cinema because of the way the script weaves all of these stories together. usually, i'm wary of films being too emotionally manipulative when it feels as if the film didn't really earn it. this is one of those cases that it does earn it. i do have a bit of a problem with the pace of the film (there are a few spots in which some footage could be cut; it probably works best with 10 less minutes or so) but it works despite those problems.
