it kind of felt like a short story that got padded out to feature length, though it is apparently is a fairly faithful adaptation of the novel. the core plot with stillson is a strong story that combined with the inciting accident would have made an excellent episode of the twilight zone. the other plot threads are fine, but they all feel a little bit unnecessary. the serial killer plotline wraps up quickly enough that it feels more like a introductory event than a main plotline. once we get an idea of where the stillson plotline is going and it finally feels like the main story is starting... read more

i know i can be pretty hard on david cronenberg, but i had a great time with this. granted it's more king than cronenberg, what with the lack of body horror and a straightforward, episodic narrative; however i think it's those "shackles" that keep him focused on character work, and in the realm of entertainment. it's still bleak, but there's a humanity to it that often gets drowned out in cronenberg's other movies. read more

film 12 of obligatory october of horror ii jumpscare counter: none, this is honestly not a horror movie one of the most generic "person develops psychic powers" films i've ever seen. lot of 80s stank on it, nothing to make it memorable except a performance by christopher walken who i will never be able to take seriously in anything. read more

The most unbelievable part of this film isn't the psychic powers; it's that Christopher Walken interacting with children would heal and improve them rather than traumatizing them for life.

Now that I've gotten my obvious joke out of the way, I just found this film utterly underwhelming. Maybe it was good in 1983, but 40 years later it felt slow, disjointed, over-acted, and kind of melodramatic.

The whole time watching it I kept thinking it felt like a Stephen King novel chopped down until there wasn't enough left to really present the story properly, and of course after read more

The Dead Zone just didn't do it for me. I didn't know anything about it going in except that it was directed by David Cronenberg, based on a Stephen King novel, and it starred Christopher Walken - so it should have done it for me.. The dialogue/delivery just felt archaic and it never really made me feel anything. The premise is definitely promising so this movie had plenty to work with there, but it just doesn't seem to do anything interesting with it. I do understand they were going for bleak but it fell too hard into just plain boring. Martin Sheen did elevate the movie once he comes in... read more

8.5 la zona muerta. película muy infravalorada, pero que realmente tiene momentos excelentes. la primera hora es prodigiosa, para mi gusto la mejor película de poderes psíquicos, y sin duda una de las mejores de david cronenberg. la música es responsable también de ese ambiente trágico del personaje, que interpreta maravillosamente christopher walken. todos los actores están a la altura, en especial el doctor interpretado por herbert lom, que hace las veces de único amigo. la película no ha envejecido nada mal, y quizás lo peor que se le puede achacar es que es demasiado episódica. me encanta... read more
