stardust memories is an odd film, one that hits more than it misses but is ultimately way to referential for its own good. read

perhaps woody allen's best film. perfect in virtually every single way big and small. pitch perfect performances, drop dead funny comedy, blistering black and white cinematography, marvellous music, a stellar script, etc, etc, etc... stardust memories is a nod to cinema from around the world and a sort of fictional autobiography of woody himself. it really does contain every element of filmmaking that makes people call woody a genius. woody has so many great films it's hard to pick a favourite but when i think about it this one usually makes it in the top two or three. quite literally a read

it all came across a little too whiny and "woe is me" for my tastes. essentially this is just woody allen's 8 1/2 even if he denies it being autobiographical. honestly i agree with the crowds in the film that say his earlier stuff was funnier, as woody allen's early work is comedy gold. woody allen is very aware of himself and how he is perceived, or at least how he was in 1980, but that alone doesn't make for compelling viewing. the jokes weren't particularly funny and they took a backseat to self-reflection that wasn't particularly interesting. read
