if you thought supes iii was bad, wait till you see this. this movie was why the supes series crashed and lay dormant for decades before bryan singer resurrected it in '06 read more

just when you thought it couldn't get worse than superman iii comes superman iv: the quest for peace. it's a very sad thing this as it seems that the producers and all involved tried to make up for superman iii by fixing the wrongs from that film. no more slapstick, brought back gene hackman as lex luther, action, super foe, louis lane, superman doing what he does best. sadly the film is hampered by a poor budget, atrocious special effects, poor acting, terrible costumes and a piss poor script. when i say a piss poor script i mean it. it's filled with awful dialogue, awful contrived plot read more

the titular quest for peace is about superman singlehandedly trying to put a stop to the nuclear arms race, by quite literally intercepting every airborne missile, collecting them in an enormous fishnet in space, and chucking it into the sun. meanwhile, lex luthor has stolen superman's strand of hair that he donated to a museum to hold up a cartoonishly heavy metal ball, which he intends to shoot off into the sun, using its stored-up nuclear power as a sort of instant-incubator to bring about the birth of: nuclear man. thank you sir, may i have another!!! full article here: read more

there's no controversial revisionist opinion to be had here. superman iv is bad. really bad. i love cannon films, but they were absolutely the wrong studio to handle a blockbuster property like superman. they're corman-level shlockmeisters that cut corners in the extreme just to save a dime. superman himself is made out to be a creepy, manipulative, impulsive and scary super-being that's arguably more of a threat to the world than any of his dorky arch-villains ever were. the deep-seated and underlying problem with this one is that its story refuses to be just a silly comic book romp. read more

Very forgettable. Except for Jon Cryer's exceptional performance as Lex's nephew, Lenny. Such a beautifully nuanced performance that he steals the show every time he's in the frame. The dialogue was perfection with lines such as; "Yeah, you're just an experiment, freako!" and who could forget, "Oh, no! He's like... He's, like, cold." I am afraid to check the history books because if Jon Cryer didn't earn an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor as Lenny, then I just don't think that I can possibly have any faith in the Oscars any longer.
