a surprisingly engaging "sleeper-hit", especially more so, since i'd been awake for more than 20 hours while watching this film in-flight the first time. it survived a rewatch rather well, as i realised all the nuances i'd missed years ago while fading in & out of jetlag.
political intrigue's not usually my chosen genre, but mcgregor pulls off an excellent young writer-wannabe-turned-ghost, writer, that is...brosnan's suitably aloof and cagey as a former brit pm, and cattrall shines (much more than in her satc roles) as his personal assistant with a frosty brit accent (she should so turn it on more often). but the star of the show is olivia williams as the steely "supportive" political wife who worries incessantly about how the public will perceive her husband's administration (yet somehow finds the time & will to cougar mcgregor along the way).
what surprised me most at the closing credits was that it was directed by polanski, the epitome of anti-cougar, and yet could elicit differing degrees of empathy with the lead characters by the end. for spoliers & a full plot review, check out http://www.lairoftheboyg.com/2010/09/ghost-writer-2010.html but the winning quote of the movie is: ruth, when asked if she never wanted to be a politician in her own right, snaps back to mcgregor, "didn't you want to be a proper writer?". even her apology to him is dripping with vindictive sarcasm, "i've hurt your feelings."
