tropical malady has a reputation, as do all the other films of apichatpong weerasethakul, for being difficult, demanding, and slow. perhaps there is some truth to those. it is certainly slower than mainstream cinema fare. but it also deserves to be mentioned that tropical malady, along with his other films, are vibrant, colorful, sensory joys with a mean comedic streak. it may be true that he eschews narrative at points but you won't find many other movies so full of life and intelligence as tropical malady.
the film is divided into two halves. the first one unfolds as a romantic comedy between two guys in thailand. there is nothing new about the story but it unfolds in wholly unexpected and fresh ways. apichatpong has always had a knack for taking genre trappings and transforming them into something that feels completely new the second half turns into a spiritual, meditative piece focusing on a tiger shaman and a soldier. at first, these seem a bit disjointed. but, they are thematically very similar. exploring questions about the animal nature of humans and how our social lives reflect these patterns even though, at first glance, they seem like completely different realms. the thematic link makes these two narratives work together very well.
however, with very little dialogue through the last part of the film and its slow meditative pace, it isn't an easy film to stomach for people used to mainstream film. but the meditative pace and hypnotic visuals and tone make this a rewarding film for those willing to fall under its trance. this film is truly an experience worth having.
