it is all spectacle with no real substance. it is extremely preachy and horny at the same time, which is a weird mix. it really loves that the christians are the persecuted group and kinda savors that. there is also a weird theme of all the slave women being madly in love with their owners. robert taylor is a fairly bland leading man that fits better as the horrible asshole at the beginning than the semi-redeemed hero at the end. peter ustinov is playing nero as big as he can, but it absolutely works. he is captivating and infuriating and really props up the film whenever it is dragging too... read more
