show me love is a deeply moving and powerful film about the universal truths of growing up in the modern age. moodysson captures the milieu and feelings of being a teenager so naturally that i couldn't help but be engrossed by the story, plot, and characters. his characters here do something rare in films like these: they transcend the stereotypes that they could easily fall into and become living and vibrant characters that we care about deeply. none of them is perfect but we can recognize parts of ourselves in each one of them. we sympathize with them. that is one of the greater triumphs of this film.
through that recognition, we can feel the characters pain, joy, triumphs and struggles. the struggles to find yourself and to be comfortable being yourself cut right to the core of what it is to be a human in the social world that we have created. that note rang most true for me. the trials and tribulations that these characters are dealing with never feel fake on any level. they never feel like hollywood concoctions to please the masses or amp up the tension levels. this film takes low stakes and uses it to its advantage.
moodysson also finds beauty and humor in the humanity on display here. there are scenes that are really funny and ones that reveal the beauty of being human and coming into your own as a human being. it recognizes the beauty in love, no matter where you find it. it revels in the rebellion of the teenage years. there is just so much to love about this movie. one of the best coming of age movies out there.
