film #2 of hooptober part v: a new beginning hammer films was a bastion of greatness for horror for decades starting with the 1950s. the studio is known primarily for this films, particularly the ones starring christopher lee and peter cushing. the horror of dracula is the film that, along with 1957's the curse of frankenstein, started it all. and while it doesn't quite hit the highest levels of great horror, it is easy to see why this is a revered entry in the genre. lee and cushing are both stellar as dracula and van helsing in this moody, intelligent riff on the bram stoker classic. jimmy... read

they condensed the classic dracula story quite a bit, but do so in a way that doesn't lose the essence of the story. christopher lee made an excellent dracula in what was a very limited appearance. i would have liked to see more of him, he doesn't even have a line of dialogue in the last hour of the film. peter cushing was a quality van helsing as well. they create a good atmosphere for the story without going full gothic. the vibrancy of the red blood really worked well also. watched as part of scavenger hunt 42 task #29: pick a film that you picked on a past scavenger hunt that... read

hooptober 5 #1 watched this on shudder. this was my first hammer film, and it was pretty damn cool. i have to say, that the majority of the way dracula was shot reminded me of tim burtons batman. dracula looked pretty cool for the majority of the movie. the movie started off amazing with the jonathan harker story, but started slowing down once van helsing was introduced, although i quite liked peter cushing. the last sequence was pretty damn good. good start to hooptober! read
