one of the prettiest films i've ever seen. the color use and cinematography is out of this world. pretty messy in the story department, and the doling out of information. the supernatural aspect felt a bit like it came out of left field, i'm not sure why though. still, some fun scares and scenarios along with those beautiful visuals carry the film just enough to be a light 4/5. intrigued to see how the remake coming out later this year fares. read

unique balance between camp and horror. the only thing i can think of that's comparable to this would be hausu, another foreign horror film also released in '77. it's entirely possible that the camp is simply product of it's time, but i'm convinced that by how much i hear about argento being a master filmmaker, this was entirely intentional. as said many many times before, the strongest aspects of the film are the dubbing, make-up, music, and lighting. everyone has their own personal favorite facet, and mine is the phenominally scored music by goblin. thanks to these folks, i'll have a read

the glorious techicolor technique and constant aural cacophony in suspiria very effectively created the hallucinatory nightmare of a ballet academy with sinister secret resides within. suspiria opens up with unrelenting drumbeats of goblins opening to the sighs and after a short narrative, we see suzy bannon on the walk towards the airports exit, a brief moment of restraint in the movie and the nightmare immediately begins as soon as she left the airport into the heavy downpour. suzy then arrived the dance academy, the oversized bourgeois house and large looming door with big doorknobs, read

film #3 of hoop-tober 2.0 suspiria is one of the greats of the 1970s italian horror era and the height of dario argento's illustrious career. while horror in the '70s was often a grimy, low-budget affair that focused on reality over cinematic style, argento helped lead the other direction and here's one where he truly excels. the tale of a coven of witches hiding in a germany dance academy is stylish in the extreme, punctuated by vibrant color and great performances. foremost among those performances is jessica harper in the lead role of suzy. suzy is a likable character and harper invests a... read

hooptober 666 bonus watched in the prince charles cinema. happy halloween! the scan the prince charles cinema was the german 4k restoration, which is not my preferred version (synapse gimme that 4k already!), but it still looks marvelous on the big screen. first time seeing this in a theatre as well. the music sounds marvelous with the sound system also. great finish for halloween! next is frightfest halloween and noirvember! read

just delicious to look at. half the fun is trying to decipher what's going on with the architecture, who chose this furniture, where all these lights are hiding. i thought i was tired of straight-to-netflix horror lighting, but what i actually hate is how flat and smooth it looks. susperia is all texture, the most texture, texture you can taste, spilling and mixing with the frame to form weird greens and yellows and beating heart reds. let me live and die horribly in velvet walled hallway. read

a mediocre film carried by great, great visuals and excellent use of lighting. (lots of beautiful red lighting) might like it a lot more on a rewatch, but i can't help but feel disappointed by the movie after seeing the hype for it. read

the film is no masterpiece, but sure as hell it can keep you entertained. you can count to see some gory images even for a horror film about witchcraft, but you can rest assure, that only adds up to a fim that with the lack of character development it has and the weak dialogue between characters, at least, its beautiful for the eye, you know, if you like these sort of films. the lightning, the colours, the camera angles, were absolutely the best things that the film had to offer, it was almost like having a psychedelic experience. as i said, the writing could be better, the characters could... read

that was quite the wild ride. suspiria has me conflicted. on one hand, i loved how out there and creative this was. the colours, the music, the almost surreal style the story is presented. on the other hand though, it's quite poorly acted, the script isn't exactly strong, and there's some horrendous english dubbing going on. i guess this is where the split between rating and use of the letterboxd orange heart like button happens. it may not be perfect, it may not even be well-made at all, but it's one of the most unique horror films i've ever seen. watch suspiria. read

Thin on story, big on vibes. The camera work, colors, sets, holy shit. I've rarely just been obsessed with the way something looks like this movie. The blocking is sooooooooooo good. Man, every room, every light, all just is gorgeous.
The plots thin, but were very serviceable to me considering the creepy aesthetics that came along. I didn't enjoy the fact it was over reliant with ADR dubbing and really didn't capture any of the natural in the moment acting for many of the actors in this film. I get why this technique was used, but even here seems so dated for this era.
Despite that, read
