j. paul getty (christopher plummer) was the richest man in the world when his grandson (charlie plummer) was kidnapped in 1973. he refused to pay a dime of the $17 million dollar, saying he couldn't afford it and it would set a bad precedent. the boy's mother (michelle williams) is left with only the aid of the italian police and a former cia operative who works for getty (mark wahlberg) to help recover her son. the film unfolds in a tense drama that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. michelle williams is fantastic as a desperate mother willing to do anything to save her child,... read more

Inspired by the notorious 1973 incident, this is less a thriller than a tale of consuming greed that provides a majestic portrait of a ravenous miser: in spite of having been hastily overwritten on scenes originally shot with another actor, Christopher Plummer's performance as a man trapped by his own impenetrable avarice is the main saving grace of an occasionally clumsy drama. read more

It's funny that all I knew about this movie were all its controversies from around the time it came out. Between the entire situation with Kevin Spacey, to the pay disparity between Marky Mark and Michelle Williams, I feel like that's all anyone actually was talking about when it eventually hit theaters. The fact that Christopher Plummer filmed all these scenes in a week and then got nominated for Best Supporting Actor is crazy, but well deserved. I already hated Getty the company, and now I hate Getty the man, so the movie does a very good job of doing that. Michelle Williams was robbed of... read more

Well this movie will be talked about for all the wrong reasons with the basic sacking of Kevin Spacey from the movie and replacing him with the much older Christopher Plummer. Maybe Spacey would of been more evil in his role due to his real life adventures but nice guy Plummer didn't do a bad job of portraying the horrible J. Paul Getty. Who did a better job we will never know. The movie itself is not bad for a drama/thriller and the acting performances are pretty good. It's not a bad movie just a bit long at 2 hrs 15 mins. read more

Mediocre film with nothing memorable to offer. A bit underwhelming in terms of the plot (more potential may be) but acting was good. Might have worked better as a book. read more
