film #17 of hooptober 4.0: revenge of the hoop
for the last forty minutes of its running time, shocker is a horror film of inspired goofiness. wes craven finds a way in the final act to throw all logic out the window in a good way, making for a hilarious and fun conclusion to his supernatural serial killer film. unfortunately, that final act largely fails to justify the first seventy minutes. during the first two acts, this film is exactly what it appears to be: an attempt to reconjure the nightmare on elm street magic with little of the quality that made freddy krueger a blast.
don't blame mitch pileggi for this, though. as horace pinker, pileggi is almost all of the fun in majority of the movie. he captures the kind of madcap lunacy that this film desperately needed. he's no robert englund to be sure, but he does a fine job. the rest of the cast is haphazard at the absolute best. this is one of peter berg's best cases for why he's a better filmmaker than an actor and the rest of the cast flounders in meaningless roles. craven has a couple of inspired moments here but most of them fall flat. there's value to be had in watching this, particularly for craven completionists. but it's not nearly as fun of a ride as it should have been.
