psycho is a classic. psycho ii was a lot better than it had any right to be. so i was excited for psycho iii. but within minutes i new i was going to be disappointed..
p3 just disappoints from the get go. it starts with bad acting and really never gets better in that department. it also never quite feels like a psycho film as gone is the great music by hermann and goldsmith and instead we get a pretty terrible generic 80's score by who the hell knows.
instead of a smart film with twists and turns and an original story we get a rehash of the first film told in a generic 80's slasher way with a crappy story and a crappy script. gore, nudity, stupid sex scenes, people dying for no reason, norman killing like he is michael myers, it just plain sucks when you know this is psycho.
it's still fun to see perkins play norman bates but all he really does here (besides poorly direct) is repeat his famous lines, actions and facial ticks from the first film. his needless killing, with a cop who continues to think he is innocent as the bodies pile up, and his same disposing method for dead bodies makes the film unoriginal, unbelievable and just plain stupid. how could he not have gotten caught?
and this time bates gets a love story, a tragic one but a love story none the less. and it just doesn't work. the whole renounced nun subplot gets in the way and has no bearing on the film at all. it could of been so much more interesting if the film focused on the love story (she a murderous ex-nun; he a murderous ex-psycho) and gave us twists and turns and tragedy.
no instead we get a poorly made and poor looking film that tarnishes the psycho name; unoriginal in every way, derivative of every crappy 80's slasher flick and filled with poor performances. even the corpse of his mother/not mother/who the hell knows looks cheap and terrible compared to the low budget original made 26 years before!
don't even get me started on that final scene. pretty much the last five minutes of this film is contradiction after contradiction and contradiction.
i guess this movies get's it two stars, or 44% because of perkins. even though he's just repeating all his favourite lines and doing his 'crazy' facial ticks and stammering all again it is fun to watch. for that reason alone it's worth watching say in a psycho marathon but otherwise i say skip, skip, skip right over it.
