1985 challenge #15 cult of personality 2019 rutger hauer watched this on eureka blu-ray. this needs a new remaster, lots of shots will tons of blacks look like complete shit. good amount of extras though. genre movie with tons of sleaziness, violence, and dark humor? this is definitely a paul verhoeven movie. and it's his hollywood debut and we got the dutch goats of rutger hauer in the lead role and jan de bont shooting. it's another good verhoeven movie with good production values and sets, and rutger hauer and jennifer jason leigh were really great. my biggest complain is read

i admire verhoeven's efforts to de-romanticize the medieval era in cinema. hardly anyone was a saint, or a charming rogue. heroes didn't come in the morally just™ packaging like they do in the movies. unfortunately, the end result also leaves me asking: why? why clamor for realism in a genre that thrives on pure escapism? why do i need to suffer through a brutal movie like this without a single hero to cheer on? i like my sword-brandishing movies to be bloody, and i'm always down for a little t&a as well, but the push to make a thoroughly unpleasant experience just baffles me. the movie read
