early john woo, it lacks the visual flair his later movies have, but it's still very good for its time. the story and characterization are decent though the last scenes descend into theatrical melodrama and the main villain is established as the worst by things like repeatedly killing his own men for sport. there is a genuine attempt at a storyline though, rushed as it is. side note: it is so rushed that all main characters meetings happen as a meet cute with insta!connection and, in one case, complete with not remembering who the other is shenanigans. it is quite funny, unlike the sniveling comic relief villain sidekick.
also, time was spent on scenes that i found repetitive, mainly involving the 2 heroes drinking and/or spending time with a courtesan.
but the reason to watch a wuxia movie is choreography. does this one deliver? yes, especially if you are into weapons (mostly saber, but also halberd, staff, twin sabers, and a bit of chain). there is a very classic rhythm to the choreography and a lot of flourishes, which might seem artificial and weird to an eye used to modern action movies. that's one reason why fights take a very, very long time. the other reason is that every skilled fighter can take a ridiculous amounts of hits and cuts, as if they had an hp pool instead of a real human body. i liked it, because sometimes it's great to see the clean techniques over the frantic, realistic style. that being said, this is as realistic as wire-fu but less in-your-face fantastic, so it's definitely not for everyone.
