the first adaptation of john le carre's work really captures the realities of spycraft. as opposed to the glamour and action of bond or bourne, le carre focuses on the paranoia and complete lack of trust. actual spycraft doesn't feature nuclear devices on rocketships and diamond smuggling, it trades in information and assets and no one knows anything more than they absolutely have to. martin ritt does a fantastic job piecing together a tense thriller despite not working with the classic ingredients of a thriller. there aren't dramatic chase scenes or countdowns, but ritt creates the tension... read more
