a pure exercise in creating the metal aesthetic. there is value in that, for sure, but i found the visuals to be lacking in poignancy and a bit self indulgent. the film bombards the viewer with its aesthetics without any restraint, resulting in the intense boredom i felt during the first and second act. restraint is what this movie lacks on all visual fronts from the sometimes overused sound effects to the constantly visible visual flair. the film, however, is carried by a terrific performance by nicolas cage that amps up the entertainment value quite a bit. the appearance of nicolas cage read more

ugh. not my cup of tea. gratuitously over-long, try-hard revenge gore fest that fails to really say anything about anything. the "artsy" red and pink lighting that drenches everything in obscurity gets real old, real fast and the shoddy, meandering dialogue and dissonant synthy score are positively soporific. read more

hollow and lacking any real substance beyond spectacle. its two movies girated into one while simultaneously split in twine. the first hour could have been interesting but it wasnt given a chance to develop further. the second half could have been meaningful but it wasnt properly set up. did i cheer when cage forged his own ax? of course, i did. but that isnt enough to hold a film together. this was another ocean walker. read more

this movie is absolutely insane and brutal, but it is also incredibly boring. it literally put me to sleep. it is a simple revenge story that is told at a glacial pace by a filmmaker that is most interested in the visuals. i think this film was storyboarded with specific images they wanted to use and they worried about how to get there later. there is definitely an audience for this film, it just isnt me. i like plot, and there is the bare minimum here. there are some really great visuals, but they arent really working towards a purpose, they are the purpose. it is good to see nicolas cage... read more

My quick rating - 6;6/10. This is a good role for Nicholas Cage; that of a vengeanceful man seeking revenge for murdering his wife? (I never caught if they were married or not; don't think that matters). As the two are traveling peacefully they encounter a sadistic; blood-thirsty cult that turns their lives inside out. The movie is filled with quite a bit of drug induced imagery that sometimes does get confusing but does help in showing why the cult members are so messed up. Well this movie was certainly very different for Nicholas Cage and has garnered quite a few good reviews. I felt a bit indifferent to the whole thing. I love all the crazy violence and there was plenty of blood to please horror fans but I wasn't that keen on all the psychedelic visuals throughout the movie. Its certainly one of Cage's best in recent years and will be somewhat of a cult film I imagine but its definitely not for everyone. read more
