i like the opening sequence but the rest of the film is an incredibly standard twienth century period piece about racism. still very watchable; it's got a nice momentum, and the usual didactic preaching these movies always have is more tolerable here because the characters are effectively supposed to preach. however, too much of the basic conflict throughout the film boils down to racism, plain and simple. the final debate is well made but it is basically just denouncing racism at the end. there's a lot of fluff like that but it's got a good energy. read more

I've seen a few people refer to this as the movie they put on at school you gotta watch and there is a lot of truth to that. I am sure this has been on in so many English classes since it came out, however, like lots of books that you get exposed to in school it's a story that deserves its time to shine. Denzel directs and this is the 2nd time this year I have watched a movie by an actor, Bill Paxton being the other and both men really impressed me with their work behind the camera.
