i just watched the two films i own by director george roy hill. interestingly enough i expected to love slap shot and i ended up not liking it at all and i expected to hate funny farm (a film i haven't seen since i was probably 11 or 12) but actually kind of liked it.
i thought this would be a lame duck of a comedy because, you know, latter day chevy chase but actually he was damn funny. the rest of the movie around him had a few laughs but otherwise wasn't very funny but chase, he was comedy gold. his naivety, his buffoonery, his reactions, his expressions were classic chase comedy and he made the movie very enjoyable.
if you take him away you get a decently acted, nicely shot and edited comedy movie that is mostly lame on jokes, with a few good ones, mostly lame story, with a few fun moments and mostly generic actions and events that propel it forward, with a moment or two that are generally creative.
if you took chase away you would have a movie that was not worth recommending. you'd have a movie that wouldn't be that entertaining, a movie that would be too long and a movie that wraps up it's characters arcs in a matter of seconds, making the end of the film almost a non ending. you'd have a movie that was pretty much not worth watching.
but chase is there and every moment he is on the screen is amusing. and he is there 99% of the time which makes the movie a fn, brezzy one time watch.
