ever since i saw the play i have loved this story. i saw the play when i was 10. topol was in it. it was such an eye opening experience. i loved the movie when i saw it a few years later. i has seen parts of it since then but never again in whole until now.
and it is just as good as it has always been. just as enjoyable. just as memorable. just as touching. just as magical. it is one of the greatest musicals of all time.
topol was born to play this role. no one can ever come close. norman jewison was born to direct this film. he does a fantastic job. every ingle song and piece of music is amazing. these songs are about 50 years old but they are timeless. they could of been written today.
jewison does a masterful job making a cinematic version of the theatrical production. with grade a sets and sweeping cinematography he makes the film a thing of its own. it's amazing how little story there actually is in the three hour run time and yet it flies by like it is nothing.
i will say this: 99% of this movie is a 5 star film. it's that good. the other 1% is made up of two things that i thought could of been better. one is the acting. topol is amazing and carries the film and many of the other actors are fantastic but some of the acting is, a little worse than the rest. no one is bad per say but they never reach the heights of the other actors.
the only other thing that brings this film ranking down is that some, very little (but enough), of the staging is too theatrical and comes off as such instead of realistic or cinematic. the scene where topol's daughter and her soon to be husband are in the trees dancing is a prime example. it just felt odd and off tone compared to the rest. jewison makes tis feel like a movie, like something real even, for 99% of the film but then you have that 1%.
that's it. that's my review of a film and play that i love. this is phenomenal entertainment. epic hollywood musical production at its best. i could watch this ever year and never get bored and i bet you could too. i want the soundtrack now. best song, out of so many amazing ones: sunrise sunset.
