batman: mask of the phantasm (1993) was based on and features the same voice cast as in the acclaimed batman: the animated series that appeared in the early 1990s. this is a great opportunity to express my opinion about the film and the series in general.
as mentioned in a previous review, the two tim burton films have had a lot of influence on the atmosphere and design of the animated series from the 90s. for many, this is one of the most faithful and iconic portrayals of batman and all of his well-known villains. after the first season of the animated series ended (consisting of sixty-five episodes), warner bros. capitalize on the popularity by producing a full feature film. so there was mask of the phantasm.
this animation film is also aimed at young viewers, but the dark touch and the adult theme are never lost. the film understands bruce wayne's conflict between wanting to live a happy life and his promise to fight crime. scenes such as seeing wayne begging for forgiveness at his parents' grave or putting on the batman costume for the first time leave a deep impression.
in addition, mask of the phantasm showed for the first time, through retrospect, how bruce wayne had found happiness in his younger years and why he eventually took on the role of batman. these flashbacks are interspersed with the story in the present, the mystery surrounding the phantasm and a great supporting role for the joker (mark hamill). because of its compact running time, every minute of the film is used well and everything comes together nicely.
both batman: mask of the phantasm, and the entire '90s animated series, are a lot more respectful and interesting than many other forms of batman media, including the movies. this 'cartoon' sold the essence of batman so well that it has become one of the most beloved incarnations of dc's famed superhero.
