rachel getting married features anne hathaway in a knockout performance. she blows everyone away and steals every scene she is in, which is almost everyone.
demme films the movie like a documentary and makes you, as the viewer, feel like you are a participant at the wedding. it almost feels like a very well shot and put together wedding video. even the soundtrack is performed by the wedding band, quieter when far away, louder when closer and the band members actors/performers.
but that is where the problem lies with the film. it feels like you are at a wedding and therefore that is what you watch. hathaway is a troubled character and there is a bit of a story arc but otherwise we are introduced to her character and her and we go to the wedding and eat, drink, dance, cheer, observe and then we split and go home.
it's very unique, original and impeccably well made but nothing much happens. speeches run too long (just like a real wedding) and it ends up feeling overlong (just like a real wedding). but maybe that was the intention.
maybe the intention was to film a slice, a weekend, of something real, of how this story would play out in real life. on that level it succeeds with leaps and bounds but even still the lack of a cinematic arc, a cinematic story hampers the film in unintentional ways.
