this would be, after 12 films that i have watched , steven soderbergh's biggest misfire. it's not terrible but i don't think i'd ever choose to watch it again. not much happens, its not particularly engaging and it is perhaps a little overlong and overstuffed. almost deserves two and a half stars it does but its got just enough to make it pass master if you will.
there are things to like in this film but they come in between things that just didn't do it for me. there are enough of these things to like to make the film, in the end, worthwhile but still it becomes a film that is really nothing to write home about.
i liked the cast and some of the direction and camerawork was really well done. the way things change was really good too (how characters we follow end up being in a movie and then we follow their real personas; that was a cool twist). katherine keener was great. there was a really well shot sex scene. there was a scene on an airplane when a character looks over and 'the limey' is sitting there telling his story (that was the best part of this film for me). there is a great cast that all deliver well. brad pitts cameo was funny (although it would of been better if it was restricted to weird magazine cover shots). little moments sprinkled throughout the film that are funny or touching or deep all work well and really get you engaged as an audience.
in between those moments though it all kind of falls flat. the film never reaches the heights it wants to be and the interconnectedness of the characters never really comes together. at times the film comes off as more confusing at it should and it's biggest downfall is that it lacks originality. it all ends up feeling, in its construction and its story, like something we have seen soderbergh do before but better.
so in short.
best things: the film is a film within a film that has a film within that. the limey cameo.
worst things: lacks originality. never goes anywhere you think it wouldn't. lacks entertainment value and repeatability.
