egyptology has always been a powerful interest of mine and the mummy was one of my favorite films growing up. i latched onto the universal horror films of the golden age of hollywood and never let go; they were my gateway drugs to modern horror and they always hold a place in my heart. now if you're asking whether karl freund's film is still frightening today, the answer isn't quite a yes. it lacks the creepy factor of some of it's contemporaries to be sure. however, it is still quite a good film.
there are a lot of things to appreciate, but let's start with the leaders in that area: boris karloff and jack pierce. the iconic actor and his longtime make-up collaborator are etched into legend for good reason. pierce's make-up work, which was legendarily troublesome for karloff, hold up to this very day. as for karloff, he adds dramatic weight to the role and his unearthly boom of a voice is a powerful instrument put to exceptional use. they aren't the only great things though. zita johann is a compelling female lead and the rest of the cast is great, while the production work is top-notch for the era.
there are some story issues; the editing was not the best and that's the biggest drawback. but freund is a fine director, even if he did do terrible things to johann, and it all plays out well. it's not the finest of universal's golden age fright flicks but it is a classic nonetheless.
