having only ever seen the first have of waiting for guffman twice i looked forward to finally seen the whole film. not only because i enjoyed the first half but because i love christopher guest's subsequent mockumentary work.
so it was with absolute pleasure that last night i popped the dvd into the player and finally, after about five years of wanting to see this movie and then another thirteen of really wanting to see it did i finally get the chance.
and boy was it funny. blisteringly funny. laugh out laud and hurt your gut funny. everyone in this movie is bang on hilarious. without a doubt though eugene levy steals the cake as a boring dentist who was 'born to entertain'. my god i just could not stop laughing at him.
i tell you, when i had seen the first half of this film those two times i honestly thought that the play this group was making would crumble by the film's end. i thought it would be terrible but you know what. even though we laugh at these characters, and we think it will be a disaster (and the subject matter is a joke) the play that is shown at the end is actually rather good. excellent music and production values for a no budget play. this really surprised me and it gave waiting for guffman some unexpected heart.
along with that heart, guffman features stellar directing, great editing, a fantastic script, fabulous performances, (already mentioned) laugh out loud humour, wacky characters, a great sense of rewatchability and some wonderful songs written by michael mckean, harry shearer and christopher guest (spinal tap).
the biggest problem with this film was that it had to end. i enjoyed it so much and laughed so loud that i never wanted it to end. what a great film this is and i can't believe it took so long for me to finally watch it.
