Review of Long Day's Journey Into Night

Overall Rating
recommended by stephen long day's journey into night is an extremely ambitious film, with an aim to subject its audience to a poetic, dream-like experience centered around themes of love, loss, and time. at its core, is a plot that focuses on luo hongwu, a man haunted by the memory of a past lover, who returns to his hometown to find her. the film heavily relies on this plot as a way to deliver the abstract, surreal filmmaking at hand, which is what ultimately killed the experience for me. i can acknowledge the craft and competence shown by bi gan, but i just couldn't care less about any climax that the film was trying to crescendo to as almost every plot-point feels underdeveloped and unresolved. a lot of my disinterest can be attributed to the structure and pacing as well. the structure is often non-linear, clumsily jumping from time period to time period, and it almost never feels like the natural flow of the story; to boil it down, i can tell what the film wants to be, but i never feel as if i'm given this product of aspiration. while i can greatly appreciate bi's aim, i ultimately felt shortchanged in the experience. sadly, this one just wasn't for me.
