The beauty of this movie is that it takes no sides, pushes no agenda and presents a very balanced narrative.

This is a story of two people drifting apart because they no longer want the same things in life. It highlights how both of them can see the other person as treating them unfairly yet neither of them actually is. There is no malice, there is no hurtful intent. There just a desire to no longer be tethered to one another without disrupting their child's life.

i won't spoil anything for you here, so you're free to read as long as you want. marriage story is one of the smartest films i've seen this year. from beginning to end, you feel caught in the middle of a long series of pithy arguments and words unspoken. there are multiple points where i was floored with the performances, particularly adam driver and laura dern's characters. i won't say exactly why, as it would spoil the entire movie, but believe me when i say these performances are oscar-worthy. ?????/????? running time: 2h 17m you can watch this film on netflix whenever you get the chance!... read more

my favourite part of this movie was that there were no villains, only flawed humans trying to navigate a shitty situation. the dramatic performances are gripping and will stay with you. easily my favourite baumbach film to date and a stand out of 2019. read more

adam driver made me feel something. his performance here is worth the buzz and the conversation. beautiful script and amazing editing. i met my wife in acting class and ive directed her many times. this felt like a cautionary tale to value your spouse above yourself and it hit close to home. read more

they say "write what you know"... what does it say about noah baumbach that his version of a "marriage story" is actually a divorce story? i'll be the first to admit it: i'm generally no fan of baumbach. his films typically seem like the perfect crucible of indie arthouse pretension. meticulously-crafted scenes to look like they're oh-so-natural and real. characters with just enough quirk and subplots that don't add anything to the themes of the film, so you say "genius! this is the answer to the neat and tidy narratives of hollywood cinema!" it's the same thing, just made for a different set... read more

On their way to splitsville, a married couple with a kid tries and negotiate their exit strategy and salvage what affection is left between them. As painful and heartbreaking as a real separation, "Marriage Story" ostensibly takes a step back while, in fact, taking sides with the male protagonist (Driver) as his wife (Johansson) unleashes her divorce lawyer against him. This movie embodies all of the intricacies of divorce extremely well. Granted, I've never gone through a divorce, but being a child of divorce, this movie resonated strongly with me. The movie is brilliantly acted and the director does a fantastic job of pacing. This was the first movie directed by Noah Baumbach that I've ever seen, but it most definitely will not be my last. read more

Director Noah Baumbach portrays the love and loss of a marriage between Charlie and Nicole as they negotiate a world of unscrupulous lawyers when they realise their relationship is over. A stunning film with superb performances from Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, and notably Laura Dern as the fierce lawyer representing Nicole, with a emotionally powerful scene when the two of them bear their hearts to each other that makes this worth the entry price alone. Make no mistake, this is a movie highlight of the year and up with the best of them. read more
