bronson is a beast of a film directed by a beast of a director starring a beast of an actor. that director is nicolas winding refn and that actor is tom hardy.
now bronson is a very good film, if a little repetitive. it's low budget, it's intense and it tells a great story. the story is a true story. the story is about the most notorious prisoner in britain. it shows who sadistically sick and twisted bronson is (which is not his real name). it shows what prison is like and what really bas-asses are like. it shows and tells why bronson should always be in jail.
but it doesn't really tell much else. it is really 90 or so minutes of hardy being bronson and fighting and being crazy and getting locked up and repeat infinitum. it doesn't hold the movie from being graet though and it still entertains in a very big way.
actually, i lie. it could of held the film back but tom hardy is just so good here he makes all 90 or so minutes a jolt, a blast, a pleasure to watch. (check out real footage of the real guy; hardy's performance is uncanny.) it's a blistering madhouse of lunacy and chaos wrapped in a sheet of shimmering exuberance. that's really the best way to describe his performance. he truly is brilliant here.
and it his him alone (okay, i'll give refn's direction a nod too) that takes this movie to another level. without him i think the movie would be half as good and a lot more on the boring side. it's not often an actor alone can make or break a movie. bronson is a case where this happens and in this case hardy delivers a performance as good as any i've ever seen. as good as nicholson in cuckoo's nest; as good as day-lewis in there will be blood.
so if you have any interest in seeing this movie then see it for hardy. i guarantee you that you will not be disappointed. sure it ain't for everyone but if you consider yourself a cinephile or like offbeat cinema this is one for the books.
